Talk program on Healthy
Heart
Canadian
Newa Guthi (CNG), organized a talk program on Healthy Heart in
cooperation with Heart and Stroke Foundation (H&SF), on March 21,
2010, in the party hall of Brampton Tower. The program was targeted
for the Nepalese community living in Brampton and Mississauga. Mr.
Bimal Man Shrestha, General Secretary of the Canadian Newa Guthi,
welcomed all the participants and briefly explained the objective of
the program.
Ms. Farina Shiddiqui, Coordinator of Heart and
Stroke Foundation, Brampton, gave a short introduction about the
foundation and its activities. She mentioned that this was the first
time such a program was conducted for a Nepalese community within
the GTA. She further mentioned that she would like to support a
similar program for the rest of the Nepalese community members in
the future.
Dr. Ilaman, on behalf of H&SF made a presentation
about the early signs and symptoms of heart problems and stroke and
also the preventative measurements to be taken to avoid these.
She further mentioned that this program is intended to increase
awareness about the healthy heart by changing the food habit and
lifestyle among South Asians living in Canada. Research report shows
that the South Asians are highly vulnerable groups for Stroke and
heart disease compared to their Caucasian counterpart. Lots of very
informative brochures were distributed to the participants, proven
very effective to increase the awareness among the participants in
different South Asian communities. In the
mean time, participants were suggested that brochures and other
informative materials to be translated in Nepali language.
Mr. Prakash Lal Pradhan, President, gave a vote
of thanks on behalf of the CNG to all participants and also to H&SF
for supporting such educative program to the Nepalese community.
Altogether, there were 67 people who attended the program. Many
participants requested a similar program on Diabetes and Breast
Cancer in the future. At last, light refreshment was provided to all
participants.
